Pamper Your Cat - Grooming Considerations - Hair Care For Feline Friends
Although cats have a well-deserved reputation as clean creatures, they don’t naturally repel dirt. All cats, including those that are grown, get a little on the dirty side from time to time. Depending on the type of hair your cat has, it may be impossible for them to stay clean entirely on their own. Longhaired cats will need your assistance to keep their coats nice and clean. They need your help to keep their coat nice and beautiful; the way they all prefer to be.
Unless you plan on getting your cat shaved on a routine basis, then you will need to provide some combing help. If you don not stay on top of the combing, your long hair cat will soon become one big matted mess of fur! The combing and brushing can also reduce the amount of fur that they shed, which is something that you will both grow to appreciate!
When it comes to your cat’s grooming needs, there are a lot of great products on the market, today. There are basic tools of the trade, some are for shorthaired cats and others are geared for longhaired cats, including:
Long Haired Cats Natural or wire slicker brush Stainless steel wide-tooth comb Short Haired Cats Soft-bristle brush Rubber curry brush
Both the longhaired and shorthaired breeds of cats can also use the following supplies:
Fine Tooth Flea Comb Cat Nail Clippers Flea Shampoo Baby Oil Cotton Balls Ear-Cleaning Solution Gauze Pads Saline Solution
The Rubber Curry brush helps a great deal in the removal of fur that is about to be shed. The flea comb helps to get rid of those leas that can be left behind by wider teeth on a regular style comb.
The best tools for combing your cat’s hair are those that have a rubber coating, or one that is made of Teflon. This helps to prevent static electricity that may come as a result of the combing. There’s nothing worse than a cat full of static! Your cat won’t like it and neither will you.
Another important part of grooming is clipping the nails. If this is something you don’t want to tackle, you can have your vet do it on routine visits. If you are comfortable with clipping the claws, then feel free to do so. It may be easier for you to do it at the beginning of the process. Just remember to keep him or her relaxed and to not clip too close to the quick.
You love your cat and want him or her to be comfortable. With a matted coat of fur, your cat will not be very happy! Help him or her out and routinely comb through the hair. Most cats find this very relaxing and are more than happy to cooperate.
